That depends on the lure. Usually not!

depends on how deep you want the lure to go in the water.if you want it shallow l would start out with split shot and add more until l got the desired depth.if you think you have to much split shot on there then try a small sinker.

Did not mention if it be a spinner or full body (plug) type but, either one it is best not to because spilt shot or as far as that goes, any added weight is goin' to throw the correct action/movement of ur lure off ;). < ' ( (( > <

Note: If ur wantin' a farther cast then droppin' in pound test on ur line would be the better way, just remember lighter the line easier the breaks. However if ur wantin' it ta' dive deeper & it be the plug type, go with one that has a longer lip/bill.

if your fishing a river , yes , l fish for salmon with a spinner with a ledger weight to hold the lure in the same spot . if your fishing a lake ,no , use the lightest line you can and make sure that the spool is full , this reduces drag on the line when casting .

That depends on the lure. If using a soft plastic worm, usually rigging it texas style with a bullet sinker is the best. Certain other soft plastics may call for a split shot or two.

For spinners, crankbaits, buzzbaits, poppers, blade baits, stick baits, lipless baits, spoons, & many swimbaits, adding weight will usually mess up the action. If u want it to dive a little more a light split shot can be added, but it is usually just better to get a lure that will dive deeper in that situation.

The best way to figure out what works best with the different lures is to practice either out on the water, or in a pool. That way u can see the action on each lure. This will let u know how u have to work different lures to make them swim right, as well as learn what setups work best for them. Also, sometimes if u go to the company is website that produced the lure they will give u the recommended way to set it up & fish it.

Tricky question, it not only depends on the lure but also the water depth u will be fishing. Soft plastics usually require some form of weight to get them down to the fish; however, crankbaits, jigs & spinnerbaits r already weighted. While u can add weight to these lures it will impede the action built in by the manufacturer. However, this does not mean that the lures will not catch fish. If u really want to find out for sure, go out & add some weight to ur lures & see how they react & more importantly how the fish react to the added weight. Tight lines!

To put it simply no, the rods action should be able to cast it with ease, adding weight will affect the action that the lure makes when it is in the water, this will often reduce your chances of catching fish.
