What is better to use? fly fishing rod or a star reel and 9ft rod?

they are not spawning as far as l know, so im thinkin a gotta use a fly to imitate stone fly. Can l use a fly on star reel? l was think l would use a float then a ways down a small weight then at the end a stonefly. or should l buy a fly fishing rod?

i need the star rod to work! please help!

Use live bait or lures. Fresh water Coho Salmon can be caught with night crawlers, salmon eggs or crawdads, or in salt water with herring & a flasher to attract attention. The fish r known to hit a variety of lures, including medium-sized spoons. You do not need a great deal of equipment to catch a Coho Salmon; they can easily be taken if u bring a strong but ordinary rod & a pair of waders to stand in a river.

This method has u casting a line upriver, & then letting the line (up to 30 pounds) drift through an area where u might catch a Coho Salmon. Since they r likely to be in shallower water, u r not likely to need weights to hold down ur line & bait. You can do this from the shore or from a boat.

Get the Salmon is attention. Most anglers suggest using colorful lures, & often apply a commercial product that adds smell to their set up. Rattles can add sound to encourage a Coho Salmon to check out ur line.

Use ur rod tie on a (clear bobber one that looks like a bubble)./optional
Use light fluorocarbon line 8 lb.,
set drag accordingly
a few split shot to get fly down & to cast.

(a)use any large stone fly , large nymph pattern, or egg pattern when using the bobber
(b)use split shot & streamer flies, egg pattern when casting & sweeping the area
