Braided Fishing Line Problems

l just recently got into fishing (l have been doing it for years but just now finding a passion for it) and the first thing l did was replace all of my mono line with braided. After reading questions on here l now know that l should have used a backing ...but anyway ... l use 50 lb Ugly Braid because l had a small mouth bass snap my older line and l have been determined not to let that happen again. After a bit of use l notice in both my open face and closed (pfluger, zebco, and shakespear the latter two closed. Sorry, like l said, i'm a newbie) the line seems to kink at about 30 yards and either slows my cast dramatically or stops it dead. Is it because the line does not stretch and wraps over itself or is it just way to big for standard reels (though it seems alot smaller than some 8-30 lb mono)

Whether u use a backing or not, u MUST spool braided lines onto a reel with a good deal of tension on the line. Mono line does not require this because it does not compress upon itself under pressure.

Braided lines do. Many people that use the ''super'' braid lines for the first time fail to either read the spooling instructions or miss the part where the manufacture says to ''keep the line under heavy tension while placing line onto spool to prevent it from rolling under itself''.

If u unspool ur reel (just unwind it onto a dowel as braided lines do not have a ''twist'' to them as mono lines do'') & then have someone keep the braided line tight as u wind it back onto ur reel, that should solve the problem u r having.

I've been using 30 pound test Spider Wire (6 pound diameter equivalent of mono) ever since it came out on the market several years ago & have nothing but great things to say about that product.

A word of warning...do not EVER attempt to break braided line by grapping it with ur hand & pulling on it if u get snagged on something. It will give u one very nasty cut almost instantly.

Cutting braided lines requires very sharp scissors made & sold for that task. The scissors only cost about $3-$4 at the very most & r small enough to easily fit into ur tackle box. (clipper type snips do not work for this type of fishing line).

50lb test is a bit overkill for bass. Dropping down to the 30lb stuff is plenty, plus it will allow u more line on ur reels.

Good luck & good fishing -

Braided lines r not meant to be used on spincast reels (closed face reels). They work great on spinning reels (open face) & baitcasters. They were originally designed for baitcasters. The problem ur experiencing happens to all braided line.It seems to be worse with Ugly Braid.( l prefer Power Pro or Spiderwire Original Braid). The line ''cuts into itself'' when u pull it really hard. Like u would when u hang it on something & try to break it by pulling on it. Before u go fishing, pull some of the line out (about 20 feet more than ur farthest cast would be) & reel it back onto the reel. Do this anytime u hang it on anything & pull it really tight. Also 50lb braid is a little big for a spinning reel. When u replace ur line, try 20lb or 30lb. If ur drag is set properly a fish wo not break it. 20lb Spiderwire Braid( in the red pack) has a breaking point of around 36lbs. The other brands r basically the same.

50lb line for a 5lb fish?!

ROFL!!!!!

Learn how to set your drag and you should not need anything over 8 pound line.
