more and more guys in Scotland are trying the new sport of fly-fishing for CARP during the closed season. CARP here average only 30 lbs so any ideas folks? TIGHT LINES, Jim. i said b4. i'm a carp man. flyfishin' is new to me. my normal means is making the line sink and be hard to see. do l need a line to float and not drag the FLY under the water? l know to use a fly to suit whatever is hatching or does the occaisional moth as a surprise suit?what about a beetle superglued to a size 10??

Choosing ur first fly rod & reel is very important. You need to have a balanced fly-fishing outfit that will match the type & size of ur fish. For example, the fly rod & line need to be the same weight, a #5 weight fly rod & a #5 weight fly line. The weight & length of the fly rod will be printed on the rod just above the handle, it might read: 9’-5 weight or 108-5 (108 inches for a 5 weight). The weight of the line will be on the fly line box, a 5-weight could be shown as: WF-5-F, which would be a (Weight Forward), (#5 weight), (Floating fly line). The weight numbers of the fly rod & fly line will go up or down depending on the type & size of flies, fish, & types of waters that youll be fishin in.

Personally, l think a Sage Discovery Series is a decent combo for a novice fly-fisherman, (To be honest, l am not sure if they even sell those combo is any more!). Esp if u do not know if u r going to like the sport...
This question really depends on ur budget..
Whatever brand (expensive or inexpensive) , in my opinion, a ''fast action'' rod will be ur best bet in most instances. Fast action rods r easier to cast because u can get a ''tighter loop''.
l am going to ''star'' ur question. FishSteelhead, Pheasant Tail, AIRFLO r the Fly-fishing gurus.
Good fishing!
PS- For a 30+ LB Carp u would want an 8/9 weight, AT LEAST!

An eight or a nine weight fly rod is ideal for carp, but depending if ur using deep water heavy flies u may want to use a 10wt, a tip action rod is a great rod as they have plenty of power for throwing out huge flies & yet they also have lots power in the blanks for the fight with the fish too. http://fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Scierra_Fly_Rods_21.html
Scroll down to the pike rods, the next thing u need is a fly line & reel, fly reel, a simple large arbor will work fine, with lots of backing to deal with those larger fish. The second reel is a good one to choose

The fly line is the most important bit of ur kit, so try the grxi fly lines they r good quality & will last a long time

A floating line is all u should need to start off with.
You need artificial flies, check out the selection of new carp flies in most tackle shops, they r tied with deer hair which carp seem to like, a floating line is all u need, the flies will do the rest.

i've tried fly rods & personally do not like them. it is a lot of extra work that does not make a big difference. u dont see any pros out there flyfishing(no offense to u flyfisherman) but a normal rod & reel work just fine.it is the bait u need to worry about. l do not fish for carp specifically but l have caught a citation carp from VA & l caught it on a bottom rig with clam snouts( catfishing). l have also gotten plenty of carp bites off of a regular tube artificial bait sitting on the bottom. as a matter of fact last weekend l went in a small river (rappahannock above tidal) & was swimming with 20-30 pound carp in schools & fishing for smallmouth bass & they kept taking the lure when l let it sit on the bottom. l always say experience evertything u can at least once, but l have & fly fishing is not for me. Good Luck & Happy Fishing!

You will need a good, solid 9 wt rod and a large arbor reel that holds ALOT of backing. Without breaking the bank, the Redington Redfly 2 for $99 is a good bet. The Orvis Battenkill LA 5 is a very good reel that wo not break the bank ($239) or you can go with a Cabela is XSS for $135. The reel will cost more than the rod, but for taming large fish you will need a reel with a good drag that holds lots of backing, since carp make long, blistering runs.
