l just found a new lake to go ice fishing on and was wondering where about on the lake l should set my tip ups for northern and walleye. do they usually run in the middle parts of lakes or only a little bit out from the shoreline. any other tips would be helpful as well..thanks in advance

honestly for icefishing it is really hard to tell. If the fish are hungry which they probably are they will go after anything. Meaning if you put a line lets say in the middle of a lake all the fish swim after it. Unless if they cant see it or dont notice it. it wont work.
What l like to do is use worms maybe like 3 or 4 and cut them up and drop one by one to attract them and then l just fish.

That is kind of a tough one. l live in northern mn. l usually set my tip ups around 8-10 ft. If you can get a map of the lake and maybe try some points. Good luck.

l would set three tip-ups out. one at shallow depth, one at mid depth and one deep.walleye usually hold deep in the winter unless a school of baitfish are near then they will rise toward the surface. northern pike are almost always deep all year round
good luck and good fishing

Your best bet would be to find a map of the lake & place ur tip-up is on ''natural fish highways'' in depths of 10-15 FT.

Natural fish highways?- Deep water points, 8-12FT areas that held abundant weed-growth in the Fall, Rip Rap-rock areas close to drop-offs, Etc.

Even under ice Walleye tend to feed during Dusk & Dawn. Shiners r a good bait.

Northerns love sitting in weeds at this time of ice. Try to find some living weeds in 8-15 FT of water.

get a under ice fish finder and look for structure, like piles of sunken wood and rock beds in deep water, this is where they will be, because pike eat walleye and walleye live in these areas during the winter, so the pike are there too.

here it is; short and simple. during ''early-ice'' whick will last the next 2-3 weeks in the northern states u want to fish the 'sheerest most feature-oriented dropoff'. fish minnows and smelt within 1 foot of the bottom.
